Catholic clergy face excommunication following July 1st consecrations

Discussions regarding the legal and canonical implications of episcopal consecrations performed on July 1st have emerged, focusing on the status of involved clergy. According to interpretations of recent decrees, four bishops, co-ordinators, and participating priests face excommunication due to the illegal exercise of their ministry and lack of canonical mission.

While the priestly ordinations themselves may remain valid, the absence of official mission renders the exercise of sacraments and ministry illegal under church law. There is ongoing debate regarding whether these actions constitute a formal schism, which would separate the individuals from the communion of the Church. The discussions also touch upon the validity of marriages and confessions performed by these clerics, particularly within the FSSPX.
