Catholic delegates gather in Sibu for Malaysia Pastoral Conference 2026

Approximately 850 Catholic delegates from nine dioceses across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak have gathered in Sibu for the Malaysia Pastoral Conference 2026 (MPC2026). Held from September 9 to 13, the event is described as the first national-level gathering of its scale since the formation of Malaysia in 1963.

National Unity Minister Dato Sri Aaron Ago Dagang officiated the opening at the Kingwood Hotel, noting that the conference theme, ‘Celebrate, Listen, Walk Together,’ emphasizes the importance of religious communities in fostering a harmonious and inclusive nation. He highlighted that diversity requires understanding, respect, and cooperation to achieve true unity.

The minister also acknowledged the Catholic community’s contributions to the country in sectors such as education, health, social welfare, and charity. According to the 2020 Census, Christians represent approximately 9.1 percent of Malaysia’s population, with Sarawak having the highest number of Christian residents.
