Catholic doctrine emphasizes personal charity over abstract aid
The concept of charity is often measured by global impact, statistics, and large-scale campaigns. However, Catholic doctrine emphasizes a different approach: charity “on the ground” that focuses on personal encounters rather than abstract humanitarianism.
Drawing on the teachings of Saint John of the Cross and Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Deus Caritas Est, the text argues that true charity is not merely a technical distribution of resources or social assistance. Instead, it is a personal encounter rooted in respect for human dignity. The text warns that reducing solidarity to cold transactions or statistical support risks dehumanizing both the giver and the receiver, advocating instead for a localized, everyday solidarity that addresses the specific needs of neighbors and colleagues.
