Italy faces significant AI trust-governance gap in Europe

A recent study by SAS and IDC reveals that Italian businesses exhibit the highest 'trust gap' in Europe regarding artificial intelligence. While national trust in AI technology stands at 72.9 points, the reliability index—measuring the capacity to manage systems with transparency, explainability, and regulatory compliance—is only 58.8 points.

This discrepancy between algorithmic expectations and actual governance infrastructure impacts profitability. Organizations utilizing reliable AI practices show a significantly higher probability of achieving relevant economic returns compared to the market average. Key operational challenges include a lack of clarity in AI-generated responses, cited by 37.7% of organizations as a primary reason for modifying outputs.

In response to these technological shifts, various regional initiatives are emerging across Italy and San Marino. San Marino’s Strategic company has launched ‘Spaccio. AI’, a 900,000 euro initiative to establish training centers in Rome, Turin, and San Marino to teach AI integration in the workplace. Meanwhile, educational and philosophical forums in cities like Bari, Lucca, and Campobasso are addressing the ethical, pedagogical, and professional implications of the digital transition.
