Catholic institutions face scrutiny over labor and LGBTQ+ policies
Catholic institutions are facing criticism regarding their treatment of employees and LGBTQ+ individuals. On the 40th anniversary of the Vatican’s 1986 Letter to the Bishops on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons, theologians are reviewing the document's lasting impact. Known as the ‘Ratzinger letter,’ the text significantly altered church discourse and policy regarding homosexuality, with advocates noting its negative influence on LGBTQ+ ministry and lived experiences.
Simultaneously, labor relations within Catholic organizations are under scrutiny. While the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ landmark letter ‘Economic Justice for All’ advocates for the right of employees to organize and bargain collectively, reports suggest some institutions are resisting these principles. In Wisconsin, nurses at St. Mary’s Hospital have filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge after administrators refused to recognize a union vote. Similarly, Catholic higher education institutions have been accused of using First Amendment religious freedom protections to resist unionization efforts by faculty.
