Catholic leaders in Malawi call for unity and lay involvement

During celebrations marking 125 years of the Catholic Church’s permanent establishment in Malawi, Papal Envoy Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu met with various Church bodies in Lilongwe to discuss the mission of evangelisation.

Representatives from the Association of Diocesan Catholic Clergy (ADCCOL), the Association of Men Religious in Malawi (AMRIM), and the Association of Women in Religious Institute of Malawi (AWRIM) presented a joint report. Father David Niwagaba of AMRIM emphasized the need for greater unity and collaboration among diocesan clergy, religious men, and religious women to overcome challenges such as inadequate transport and coordination difficulties.

Archbishop Nwachukwu also addressed the role of the laity, urging Catholic politicians, business people, and women to use their professional skills, resources, and social influence to support the Church’s mission. He encouraged lay members to consult with priests and bishops to find ways to be of service to the faith.
