Catholic leaders in Nigeria respond to insecurity and attacks on Church properties
Catholic leaders in Nigeria are responding to escalating insecurity and targeted attacks against Church properties. In the Wukari Diocese, Bishop Mark Maigida Nzukwein has called for unity and responsible leadership to combat inter-ethnic, inter-religious, and inter-clan strife. He noted that these divisions, combined with a harsh economic climate, have led to deaths, community displacement, and increased poverty within Taraba State.
In Benue State, Bishop William Avenya of Gboko has taken more drastic measures following a systemic pattern of hostility in Ihugh. In response to multiple arson attacks on student hostels at St. Winifred Girls Secondary School and threats to medical personnel, the bishop ordered the closure of Catholic institutions and the withdrawal of pastoral workers from the area. Avenya stated that the Church cannot continue to expose its priests, teachers, and students to grave danger where their safety is not valued.
