Catholic leaders urge ethical use of AI to protect human dignity

Catholic communicators and clergy are calling for the responsible use of artificial intelligence, emphasizing that technology must remain subordinate to human dignity and religious mission.

Mr. Wirnkar, an EWTN manager, stated that while AI can enhance collaboration and pastoral communication, it should be used with wisdom. He revealed that EWTN has adopted a strict code of conduct, noting that "nothing can be done by AI from beginning to end" and that all AI applications must remain subject to human oversight. EWTN currently utilizes the technology for translation automation and procurement.

In a separate address during the Triduum in honor of St. Dominic, Fr. Christopher Jeffrey Aytona urged the faithful to prioritize natural intelligence over machine-like efficiency. He warned that human worth should not be reduced to computational power or productivity. Aytona argued that while AI can process information rapidly, it lacks the capacity for essential human qualities such as love, forgiveness, compassion, and prayer.
