Catholic leaders urge faithful to prioritize faith over politics

Catholic institutions in the United States and Brazil are addressing the impact of political involvement by clergy on the faithful. In the United States, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) released a guidance document titled ‘Faith Before Politics’ to encourage democratic participation while maintaining spiritual focus.

USCCB spokesperson Chieko Noguchi noted that the organization encourages voters to inform their consciences and defend human dignity rather than following specific political parties or ideologies. The USCCB cited the example of the Pope voting by mail to encourage civic responsibility, emphasizing that the mission of the faithful is to bring Catholic truths to political groups to protect the common good.

Similarly, in Brazil, discussions have emerged regarding how the political stances of bishops and priests affect religious practice. Guidance suggests that political disagreements within the clergy should not lead the faithful to abandon the sacraments or religious life, as Christian doctrine emphasizes faith in divine love rather than the individual conduct of ecclesiastical members.
