Pope Leo XIV calls for international aid for Somalia crisis

During the Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square, Pope Leo XIV addressed the international community regarding the worsening humanitarian crisis in Somalia. He expressed deep concern over the precarious living conditions of the population, particularly women and children, which are being exacerbated by ongoing violence and extreme weather events.

The Pope called for a generous and urgent response from the international community to provide necessary assistance. This appeal comes as humanitarian aid to Somalia has faced significant reductions; for instance, the UN World Food Programme has decreased its assistance from 2 million people to 600,000 in 2026. Additionally, UNICEF reports that approximately 4.8 million people in Somalia require urgent assistance, with nearly 3 million children at risk.

In his theological reflections, the Pope used the parable of the workers in the vineyard to discuss divine justice and mercy, urging followers to move beyond the logic of calculation and rivalry toward a justice based on love. He also reminded the faithful to learn from history to avoid repeating past errors, specifically offering a blessing to those in Pescantina, Italy, who were commemorating victims of the Second World War.
