Poland observes National Day of Remembrance of Steadfast Clergy

Poland observes the National Day of Remembrance of Steadfast Clergy on October 19, a state holiday established to honor priests who demonstrated patriotic courage and religious faith, often at the cost of their lives. The date commemorates the 1984 abduction of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, a chaplain of the Solidarity movement.

In Jelcz-Laskowice, a solemn Mass was held at the Church of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe to mark the 42nd anniversary of Popiełuszko’s martyrdom. The service was organized by Solidarity representatives from Volvo and the Oława Land region, focusing on themes of human dignity, peace, and social solidarity.

In religious news, the Elbląg Diocese announced the death of Canon Krzysztof Banacki at age 64. Banacki served for over 36 years in Poland and Germany, including as a chaplain at the Maria Vesperbild sanctuary in the Augsburg diocese.

Additionally, various parishes across Poland are holding special liturgical events, including a combined devotion to Saint Rita of Cascia and Saint John Paul II in Nieświniu, and numerous local mass intentions for deceased individuals and community milestones.
