Catholic seminaries in Poland face declining vocations and generational shifts

Catholic seminaries in Poland are facing a significant decline in vocations and structural shifts. According to statistics from the Institute of Statistics of the Catholic Church (ISKK), the number of seminarians has dropped by 50 percent between 2018 and 2024, falling from 1,985 to 984 individuals. This follows a much larger decline from over 5,000 in 1992.

At the 62nd National Conference of Rectors of Higher Diocesan and Religious Seminaries, leaders are discussing the specific needs of Generation Z, who now make up an increasing portion of the clergy. Discussions focus on how to support their formation and address the challenges of a changing religious landscape.

Experts at the conference, including Father Tomasz Wojtal, warned that overly structured seminary environments might fail to prepare students for the realities of independent priestly life. There is a concern that strict adherence to schedules and rules does not necessarily equate to the maturity required for decision-making in ministry.
