Catholic Social Services Australia marks 70 years of advocacy

Catholic Social Services Australia (CSSA) is marking its 70th anniversary by emphasizing its role in supporting refugees, seniors, and families in crisis. Chief Executive Jerry Nockles stated that the organization aims to advocate for justice and provide essential services amid growing social division and financial hardship in Australia.

Dr. Nockles noted a shift in the social service landscape, observing that while the government-funded welfare state has expanded, the gap between service costs and available funding has also grown. CSSA previously collaborated with the University of Western Australia on the ‘Real Costs, Real Impacts’ report to highlight these challenges.

Parallel to these institutional efforts, recent census data in Australia indicates a decline in identification with organized religion. Observers suggest that while formal religious affiliation is decreasing, many Australians continue to seek meaning and purpose, often prioritizing authenticity and genuine community over traditional institutional structures.
