Catholic traditions honor Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Francis of Assisi

The Catholic Church observes the solemnity of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary and the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Rosary, a prayer method involving the repetition of the Pater and Ave Maria, has roots dating back to the Middle Ages and was promoted by Saint Dominic in the 13th century as a means to combat heresy.

Historically, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was established by Pope Pius V in 1571 to commemorate the Christian fleet's victory at the Battle of Lepanto, originally under the title of Saint Mary of Victory. While the date was moved to October 7 in 1914 by Pope Pius X, some traditions still observe it on the first Sunday of October.

In addition to the Rosary, the religious calendar honors Saint Francis of Assisi, the founder of the three Franciscan orders, who is celebrated as a patron saint in Italy.
