Catholic University of America launches study on priest attrition

The Catholic University of America has initiated a research study to investigate why some priests choose to exit public ministry within a few years of their ordination. The project, funded by the Knights of Columbus, aims to determine if there is a factual increase in the number of men leaving the priesthood in their early years of service and to identify the contributing factors.

The study will utilize both quantitative and qualitative methods, incorporating anonymized data from priests ordained in U.S. dioceses between 2006 and 2025. The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University will assist in compiling the data set. Researchers noted that tracking the status of approximately 9,000 priests ordained during this period represents a significant undertaking.

This research comes amid broader discussions regarding vocation shortages in the United States. Challenges cited by church leaders include declining Mass attendance, cultural shifts toward financial and status-oriented career paths, and the ongoing impact of the sexual abuse crisis.
