Catholicos Karekin II and Six Clerics to Face Trial in Armenia

Catholicos Karekin II, head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and six senior clerics are scheduled to be tried on Friday. They are charged with failing to comply with a civil court order that temporarily reinstated Bishop Gevorg Saroyan, who had been defrocked for alleged abuse of authority and neglect of duties. If convicted, each faces up to two years in prison.

The case is described as the most significant legal challenge to the Church’s leadership. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly called for Karekin’s resignation and accused the Church of acting as a proxy for Russia, while opposition politicians, church leaders and civil‑society groups say the prosecution is politically motivated. The trial is taking place at the Armavir Regional Court in Vagharshapat, Armenia’s spiritual capital.
