Cathy Hughes receives Key to the City of Washington, D.C

Cathy Hughes, the founder of Urban One, has become the only woman to receive the Key to the City of Washington, D.C., from Mayor Muriel Bowser. During Mayor Bowser’s 18-year tenure, only six keys have been awarded, making Hughes the sole female recipient of this honor.

During an appearance on ‘The DL Hughley Show’, Hughes emphasized that the recognition belongs to her entire team rather than just herself. She credited her 1,200 employees as the true backbone of her brand, stating, “This key really does belong to all of us.” Hughes noted that while she serves as the face of the organization, her staff performs the heavy lifting required to sustain their community impact.
