CatIQ raises Saskatchewan and Manitoba storm loss estimate to C$923m

CatIQ has increased its insurance industry loss estimate for the severe storm outbreak in Saskatchewan and Manitoba to CAD 923 million. This third update represents an 8.5% increase from the previous July estimate of CAD 850 million, with the growth primarily attributed to commercial property losses.

The severe weather event occurred on June 9 and 10, 2026, bringing tornadoes, hail up to 10cm in diameter, damaging winds, and record-breaking rainfall to the Canadian Prairies. The storms triggered significant flash flooding, contributing to what CatIQ describes as a summer of record-breaking wetness for numerous communities.

CatIQ President and CEO Laura Twidle noted that the June storms initiated a ten-week period where at least one severe convective storm event reached the catastrophe threshold every week. A fourth market loss assessment and updated FSA-level loss data are scheduled for release on December 10, 2026.
