CATL achieves carbon neutrality for all 20 core battery manufacturing plants
CATL, the world's largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer, has announced that all 20 of its core manufacturing plants have achieved carbon neutrality. The facilities have received ISO 14068-1 certification, confirming that the company met its 2025 target for core operations ahead of schedule.
To reach this milestone, CATL utilized 100 percent zero-carbon electricity for its core operations in 2025, having cumulatively consumed over 18 billion kWh of renewable energy since 2023. The company reported that its carbon emissions intensity has dropped by approximately 77 percent compared to 2022, while energy consumption per unit of production has decreased by 28 percent.
Despite this achievement, CATL noted that the majority of its environmental impact remains in its supply chain, which accounts for more than 80 percent of the total lifecycle emissions of its products. Consequently, the company has set a new goal to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by 2035. To facilitate this, CATL is implementing its Carbon Chain Management System to monitor emissions from raw material extraction to logistics. Starting in 2027, the company will require key suppliers to provide detailed data on the carbon footprint of their products, using these metrics to influence future procurement decisions.
