Chinese EV and battery firms CATL, BYD, and Baidu face market shifts
Major Chinese technology and automotive companies are navigating significant market volatility and technological transitions. CATL saw a 7.8% stock increase driven by a broader recovery in Chinese growth stocks, despite mixed financial results. While the company reported a 58.5% year-on-year revenue increase to 165.22 billion RMB for the third quarter of 2026, net profit rose only 14.54% year-on-year and fell 5.77% compared to the previous quarter, highlighting challenges in translating revenue growth into higher profitability.
In the electric vehicle sector, BYD experienced a 4.4% stock rebound amid improved investor sentiment and Citigroup's positive outlook, though technical analysis suggests the stock remains in a period of stabilization following significant previous declines. Meanwhile, CATL and Changan have announced a partnership to develop the ‘Golden Bell’ solid-state battery. This technology aims for energy densities of 400 Wh/kg, potentially enabling driving ranges of up to 1,500 kilometers, with road tests projected for 2026.
Baidu is expanding its operational footprint with plans to launch a driverless Robotaxi service in London by 2027 in partnership with Freenow. Despite these developments, JPMorgan lowered its price target for Baidu from $175 to $145, even while maintaining an ‘Overweight’ rating.
