CATL and Intilion partner for 3 GWh sodium-ion storage in Europe

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL and German system integrator Intilion have signed an agreement to develop up to 3 GWh of sodium-ion battery energy storage projects over the next five years. The partnership focuses on the DACH region, covering Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Intilion CEO Hubertus Jakobi noted that the agreement expands their existing cooperation into new battery chemistries. The technical specifications for CATL’s sodium-ion solutions include a round-trip efficiency exceeding 96.5%, more than 15,000 charge-discharge cycles, and a low-temperature capacity retention of over 90%.

This deal brings CATL’s total sodium-ion energy storage orders to 70 GWh. While the 3 GWh target represents a development goal rather than confirmed deliveries, it highlights the growing commercial interest in sodium-ion technology as an alternative to lithium-ion, particularly for its cost-effectiveness and performance in cold climates.
