CATL invests 20% in New Zealand's CarbonScape
China's battery giant CATL and Hong‑Kong‑based Lochpine Capital have taken a combined 20% stake in CarbonScape, a New Zealand company that converts forestry by‑products into graphite for lithium‑ion batteries. The partnership will see CarbonScape’s bio‑graphite technology tested at CATL facilities in China, with commercial‑scale production targeted for 2029‑2030.
CarbonScape CEO Ivan William said, “Together, we aim to bring commercial biographite production online by the end of the decade.” The move is intended to address a projected six‑fold increase in demand for battery‑grade graphite and to diversify supply away from oil‑based feedstock and China‑dominated natural graphite.
The investment signals confidence in greener battery material production and could influence the global battery supply chain as electric‑vehicle adoption accelerates.
