CATL launches mass production of sodium EV batteries as global recycling market expands

The global electric‑vehicle (EV) battery recycling market is entering a period of rapid growth, driven by evolving industry standards, changing consumer preferences, and macro‑economic trends. Analysts note that the sector now includes major automakers and suppliers such as Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen Group, Hyundai, Ford, General Motors, BYD, Bosch and others, with projections pointing to increasing volumes and higher recycling rates through 2026.

Chinese battery maker CATL announced that it will start large‑scale production of sodium‑based battery cells, overcoming previous manufacturing barriers. The company secured a 60 GWh contract – the largest single order for sodium batteries to date – and aims to achieve up to 600 km of range per charge. Sodium chemistry reduces reliance on lithium and lowers material costs, targeting urban and low‑cost EVs as well as stationary storage. Production will run alongside existing lithium lines, and CATL already commands roughly 46 % of China’s EV battery market.
