CATL launches new sodium‑ion battery storage system targeting 1 GWh shipments this year

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) announced a new generation sodium‑ion battery storage system. The company plans to begin delivering the first batch to Chinese customers in September and aims to ship a total of 1 GWh of the product by the end of the year. A three‑year supply agreement with Beijing Haibo Si Chuang covers 60 GWh of sodium‑ion batteries for storage applications, representing the largest order of its type globally.

CATL officials said the sodium‑ion technology reduces raw‑material costs by 10‑20% compared with industry averages and offers advantages such as abundant resources, better low‑temperature performance, higher safety and stable temperatures during high‑rate charging. While lithium‑ion batteries remain the market‑dominant technology, CATL expects sodium‑ion cells to complement the portfolio as demand for electric‑vehicle, storage and data‑center power grows.
