CATL rolls out sodium‑ion storage system and pushes solid‑state battery mass‑production to 2030

Chinese battery giant CATL introduced the TENER sodium‑ion battery system for stationary grid storage. The modular platform offers more than 30 MWh of capacity, flexible 1‑8 hour discharge durations, about a two‑percent efficiency gain over lithium‑ion, and a low noise level of 65 dB. First units are scheduled for delivery in China in September 2026, with an international launch planned for June 2027.

Separately, CATL warned that its solid‑state battery technology will not reach mass‑production until after 2030. The company rates its current development at level 4 of 9, with pilot cells achieving roughly 500 Wh/kg. It expects to reach higher maturity levels by 2027, but full‑scale manufacturing is considered unlikely before 2030, and initial applications will be limited to premium‑price electric vehicles.

Both announcements highlight CATL’s focus on diversifying battery chemistries while tempering market expectations for next‑generation solid‑state cells.
