CATL shares plunge following third-quarter earnings report

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the world's largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer, saw its stock price drop significantly following the release of its third-quarter financial results. While the company reported a year-on-year revenue increase of 58.58% to 165.22 billion yuan, its net profit attributable to the parent company grew by only 14.54% year-on-year, falling below market expectations and declining approximately 5.77% from the previous quarter.

Several factors contributed to the earnings pressure, including a decline in gross profit margins to 20.69%, rising research and development expenses, and the impact of new battery consumption taxes in China. Additionally, market concerns have been fueled by downstream automakers, such as Xiaomi and Li Auto, increasingly pursuing in-house battery development, which threatens CATL's market share.

In response to investor concerns regarding slowing industry demand, CATL management maintained an optimistic outlook, stating that global demand for power and energy storage batteries is expected to grow by 20% to 30% next year. The company also clarified that a recent decrease in operating cash flow was a proactive measure to support key upstream suppliers by shortening payment cycles.
