CATL unveils lithium‑air battery roadmap, promising ultra‑high energy density

Chinese battery giant CATL, which controls about 40% of the global market, announced at the 2026 Powering the Nation Forum that lithium‑air technology is its next long‑term strategic focus. The roadmap follows the rollout of sodium‑ion cells for mass production by the end of 2024 and a limited‑run solid‑state line starting in 2027.

Lithium‑air cells use atmospheric oxygen as the cathode material, eliminating the need for scarce metals such as nickel, manganese or cobalt. Prototypes have reached energy densities of roughly 1,200 Wh/kg—four times current lithium‑ion cells—and demonstrated about 1,000 charge cycles at room temperature. Theoretical limits approach 12 kWh/kg, comparable to gasoline, potentially enabling electric‑vehicle ranges of 1,600 km with much lighter packs. Commercial production is not expected before the next decade, with challenges still to be solved around moisture sensitivity, carbon‑dioxide exposure and long‑term durability.
