Cats' Sleep Patterns Linked to Light Levels and Health Risks
As daylight hours shorten at the end of summer, the reduction in natural light lowers cats' melatonin production, causing them to sleep one to two hours more than in July. Cats typically rest 12–16 hours daily, but seasonal light changes can extend this period.
Excessive sleepiness in cats may also signal serious health issues such as feline diabetes. Warning signs include increased water consumption, frequent urination, weight loss despite normal appetite, reduced activity, and a dull coat. In diabetic cats, a sudden drop in blood sugar can lead to weakness, disorientation, seizures, or coma, requiring immediate veterinary care.
