Cattle and hog futures rise at Chicago Mercantile Exchange
Livestock futures at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange showed varying trends at the start of the trading week. Cattle and hog futures saw upward movement, with October live cattle closing $4.07 higher at $217.02 and December live cattle rising $4.50 to $219.22. Feeder cattle also trended higher, supported by lower corn prices.
Market activity for direct cash cattle trade remained quiet following a long holiday weekend. In Kansas, steers and heifers sold at steady to slightly lower prices. USDA reports indicated moderate demand, while worsening pasture conditions may lead ranchers to bring cattle to market earlier.
In the pork sector, lean hog futures closed higher following oversold signals. Boxed beef prices showed mixed results, with Choice cuts increasing by $1.40 to $377.57, while Select cuts declined by $0.48 to $355.39.
