Cattle Australia reviews beef transaction levy to address structural inequity
Cattle Australia CEO Will Evans is overseeing the first review of the beef transaction levy in 20 years. The current system utilizes a flat $5 fee per transaction, which Evans describes as having an 'inherited inequity' because it does not account for variations in cattle weight or the total value of the animals being sold.
One option being considered to address this structural issue is transitioning to a fee based on a percentage of sales transactions. While this could provide a more equitable model, Evans noted that it would take several years to redesign the system to ensure it can reliably fund critical industry services.
These services include the National Residue Service and Animal Health Australia. Under the current flat-rate model, these organizations have stable revenue projection models, whereas a percentage-based system would require new engagement strategies to manage revenue fluctuations. No changes to the levy mechanism are expected to occur this year.
