Cattle market outlook shows strength amid resilient beef demand
The cattle market is showing signs of strength following a period of larger-than-anticipated supplies in September and October. According to Cassandra Fish of The Beef Read, the market established a major low around Labor Day and has been trending upward for approximately seven weeks.
Key drivers for the positive outlook include stable boxed beef prices and resilient retail beef demand. Additionally, the industry is approaching a period of tighter fed cattle supplies expected in December. An upcoming cattle on feed report may indicate one of the smallest placement numbers in modern history, potentially marking the third smallest placement number ever recorded.
Despite these market fundamentals, the industry faces ongoing challenges regarding the high level of risk and responsibility carried by cow-calf producers, who manage variables such as weather, disease, and fluctuating costs for land, fuel, and feed.
