Cattle markets experience supply shifts and price fluctuations

Cattle markets are seeing significant shifts in supply and pricing across different regions. In Australia, recent heavy rainfall in northern cattle zones—delivering between 150% and 500% of average October levels—has tightened cattle supply. Initial transport disruptions caused by the rain have already impacted slaughter cattle markets, with NSW Heavy Steer and NSW Processor Cow indicators rising, and cow prices reaching new record highs.

In the United States, Mexican feeder cattle imports have increased, with approximately 2,550 head entering through Douglas, Arizona, and Santa Teresa, New Mexico. This influx has led to strengthened prices for steer calves and yearlings. While the Santa Teresa crossing is seeing increased activity, analysts are monitoring whether this represents a sustained trend or a post-holiday surge, especially as animal health conditions like screwworm continue to influence market recovery.
