Catu ordered to implement urgent scorpion control plan

The Public Ministry of the State of Bahia (MP-BA) has issued a formal recommendation to the Municipal Health Secretariat of Catu to urgently structure prevention and control actions against scorpions. This measure follows a progressive increase in scorpion-related accidents over the last three years, with 110 recorded occurrences between 2023 and 2025.

Investigations by the MP-BA revealed significant failures in local surveillance. The municipal administration admitted to lacking data regarding infestation indices and does not currently perform active searches to capture or eliminate the animals, instead relying solely on citizen complaints. Furthermore, the municipality lacks a formal plan for combating venomous animals.

The prosecutor has recommended the creation of a Municipal Scorpion Control Plan, which must include specific goals, timelines, and service flows. Required guidelines include establishing operational protocols, conducting periodic infestation mapping, implementing public education and cleaning campaigns, and maintaining daily monitoring of indicators.
