Caucagua site proposed for new international airport to relieve Venezuela's Maiquetía hub
William Bracho, former vice‑president of the Venezuelan Chamber of Air Transport, says the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía handles about 80 % of the country's passenger and cargo traffic. Recent structural problems and seismic damage have forced its temporary closure, pushing airlines and passengers to regional airports in Valencia, Barcelona and nearby air bases, which were designed for far lower volumes and now face severe congestion.
Bracho argues that Maiquetía must be rehabilitated while a second, modern international airport be built near Caucagua, about 10 km from the town of Caucagua in the state of Miranda. The location was identified in the 1982 National Transport Plan and would require seven to ten years of continuous construction under a budget‑programming law. The new facility is intended to serve as a permanent alternative to Maiquetía and alleviate the logistical bottlenecks affecting ground transportation to Valencia and Barcelona.
