Causes and management of early morning awakenings

Early morning awakenings, specifically waking up around 3:00 or 4:00 AM, are often distinct from the difficulty of falling asleep. This phenomenon is particularly common in individuals over 60 due to an advancing circadian rhythm, where sleep onset and natural waking times both shift earlier.

Several factors can contribute to these awakenings, including prostate or bladder issues, sleep apnea, joint pain, acid reflux, depression, anxiety, alcohol consumption during dinner, and certain medications like diuretics or corticosteroids.

To manage these episodes, experts suggest the ‘twenty-minute rule’: if unable to sleep after twenty minutes, one should leave the bed, move to another room with dim lighting, and engage in a monotonous activity like reading until sleepy. Maintaining a consistent wake-up time, including weekends, and seeking natural morning light are also recommended to regulate the biological clock.
