Causes and management of underarm skin discoloration
Underarm discoloration, often caused by hyperpigmentation or increased melanin production, is a common cosmetic concern for men of various skin types. Several everyday factors can contribute to the darkening of the skin in this sensitive area.
Common causes include shaving and hair removal, which can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation due to skin irritation. Friction from tight clothing or constant movement can also cause the skin to thicken and darken. Additionally, certain product ingredients, such as alcohol or fragrances found in some deodorants, may trigger irritation.
Unilever R&D scientist Matt Annecharico notes that while most modern antiperspirants are safe, harsher products can cause uneven skin tone. Managing sweat through antiperspirants and choosing fragrance-free, moisturizing, or breathable clothing options may help mitigate these issues.
