Causes and symptoms of pain during inhalation

Pain experienced while breathing in can manifest as sharp, stabbing sensations or a feeling similar to a knife thrust in the chest. While such pain may result from muscle strain or pleurisy, it can also indicate serious medical conditions including pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, or heart problems.

The pain may occur on one or both sides of the chest and can radiate toward the back, shoulder, or neck. The intensity of the pain does not always correlate with the severity of the underlying issue. Symptoms may appear suddenly, during physical activity, following a respiratory infection, or without an obvious trigger.

Pleurisy, or inflammation of the pleura (the thin membrane surrounding the lungs), is a common cause where deep breaths, coughing, or sneezing exacerbate the discomfort. Medical evaluation is recommended for new, unexplained, or recurring chest pain.
