Causes and treatments for knee pain and valgus knee

Knee pain can stem from various causes, including joint wear, excess weight, or sports injuries such as ligament ruptures and trauma. Common symptoms and management strategies include using ice for the first three days and employing elastic bandages for immobilization. Severe cases, such as fractures or ligament tears, require immediate medical attention and may necessitate physical therapy.

One specific condition, valgus knee (or 'X-shaped knees'), involves a misalignment where the knees touch while the ankles remain apart. This condition can affect both children and adults, driven by genetics, muscle weakness in the hips and thighs, or excessive weight. Such misalignment places undue pressure on ligaments and meniscus, potentially leading to chronic pain and accelerated cartilage wear, which can result in osteoarthritis. Treatment options range from physical therapy and orthotics to surgical realignment in severe cases.
