Causes and warning signs of severe morning knee pain
Severe knee pain, stiffness, and difficulty walking upon waking can be caused by several medical conditions rather than simple bone pain. Potential causes include osteoarthritis, which often increases with age, and rheumatoid arthritis, which typically causes intense morning stiffness lasting 45 minutes or longer.
Other possibilities include gout or pseudogout, which can cause sudden episodes of intense pain and inflammation, as well as bursitis or meniscus and tendon issues.
Medical attention is required immediately if a person cannot bear weight on the knee. Urgent care is especially necessary if the pain is accompanied by swelling, redness, heat, fever, chills, visible deformity, or if the symptoms followed a recent injury or fall. While awaiting evaluation, it is advised not to force walking or place weight on the affected knee.
