Hydration and morning dry mouth causes and solutions
Morning dehydration and dry mouth are common issues with various physiological and lifestyle causes. While drinking water upon waking helps replenish fluids lost through breathing and sweating during sleep, morning dryness is not always a direct sign of dehydration.
Common causes for waking with a dry mouth include mouth breathing due to nasal congestion, or more serious conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, which may also present with snoring, morning headaches, and daytime sleepiness. Other factors include anxiety, certain medications, and underlying health issues such as diabetes or Sjögren's syndrome.
Regarding persistent feelings of dehydration despite high water intake, experts suggest the importance of remineralization. Consuming highly filtered water may strip essential nutrients like sodium; without adequate sodium to balance water intake, the body may struggle to pull water into cells effectively. This imbalance can lead to feelings of dehydration or even water intoxication.
