Causes of memory loss and cognitive decline

Memory loss and cognitive changes do not always indicate Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. While frequent lapses in memory, such as forgetting names, losing track of conversations, or misplacing items, deserve medical attention, many causes are temporary or treatable.

Factors that can impact memory and concentration include poor sleep, stress, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and various medical illnesses. Specific treatable conditions that can mimic dementia symptoms include Vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disorders, and sleep apnea. Identifying the underlying cause—whether it be nutritional deficiencies, metabolic problems, or medication effects—is essential, as treating these triggers can lead to significant cognitive improvement.
