Cauto del Paso dam undergoes maintenance in Granma province

Maintenance and water management operations are underway at the Cauto del Paso dam, the largest reservoir in Cuba's Granma province. Technical works include the assembly, welding, and painting of gates, as well as the maintenance of steel cables and the installation of metal plates. Specialized electromechanical brigades from Santiago de Cuba are also working on cleaning the two main channels and rehabilitating four hydromechanical systems.

During the first half of the year, the Empresa de Aprovechamiento Hidráulico Ríogrande supplied 281 million cubic meters of water to various sectors. The agricultural sector was the largest consumer, utilizing 195 million cubic meters, followed by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, which used 28 million cubic meters for mini-hydroelectric power generation. The water utility sector required 22 million cubic meters for population and industrial supply.

Currently, the 11 reservoirs managed by the Ríogrande company hold approximately 631.6 million cubic meters, representing 67 percent of their total capacity. These efforts aim to ensure sufficient water for rice cultivation across 42,000 hectares and to meet projected water demands for 2026 and 2027.
