Cauvery River inflow rises at Hogenakkal following Karnataka dam releases

Water inflow into the Cauvery River at Hogenakkal reached 12,000 cusecs on Saturday, August 22, following continuous water releases from Karnataka’s Kabini and Krishnarajasagar (KRS) dams.

Following orders from the Cauvery Water Management Authority, approximately 4.95 TMC of water was released from the Kabini Dam to Tamil Nadu over a nine-day period ending Friday. This continuous discharge caused the Kabini Dam's water level to drop by roughly seven feet, reaching 2,275.56 feet against a maximum capacity of 2,284 feet. The KRS Dam reported a water level of 108.95 feet, with 2,000 cusecs being released into the river.

Combined, the KRS and Kabini dams were discharging approximately 14,940 cusecs of water into the Cauvery. In response to the increased flow and potential safety risks, the Dharmapuri district administration has maintained a ban on coracle operations at Hogenakkal. The Central Water Commission is monitoring the flow at Biligundlu along the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border.
