Cauvery water released from Karnataka's Kabini dam reaches Tamil Nadu

Heavy rains in Karnataka have filled major reservoirs in the Cauvery catchment, prompting the state government to release water from the Kabini Dam. The Water Resources Department said the discharge, increased to 25,000 cusecs, is moving slowly through the dry Cauvery riverbed and is now expected to reach Tamil Nadu's Mettur Dam by the night of August 3 or early August 4.

At the Mettur Dam, water levels stood at 73.33 feet on August 2, with storage at 35.63 tmc ft of a 93.47‑ft capacity. Officials noted that once the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Dam in Karnataka reaches its 90‑foot threshold, additional releases for delta irrigation will be considered. The current inflow is projected to raise Mettur's level by about four feet if sustained for a full day.
