Italian prisons face critical overcrowding and sanitary issues

Italian prison authorities and institutional leaders are addressing critical conditions within the penitentiary system. In Cavadonna, Prefect Chiara Armenia convened a meeting with the Guarantor for the Rights of Detained Persons, Giovanni Villari, and various health and judicial officials to tackle sanitary, organizational, and treatment-related issues affecting inmate quality of life.

Simultaneously, Prosecutor General Sergio Sottani has highlighted unsustainable conditions in Umbrian prisons. Reports indicate chronic overcrowding, with 1,658 inmates occupying facilities designed for 1,339 beds, representing a 29% increase in overcrowding. The situation is further complicated by staff shortages and rising instances of violence against police and prison staff, alongside ongoing mental health and addiction challenges among the population.
