Italy reports significant PNRR progress in energy and infrastructure

Italy is seeing significant progress and varied outcomes regarding its National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) investments. The Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) reported a 40% increase in environmental impact assessments for renewable energy projects in the first eight months of 2026, covering approximately 19.5 GW of capacity. Since 2021, the ministry has reviewed projects totaling 67 GW with investments exceeding €82 billion.

On the administrative front, Minister for European Affairs Tommaso Foti announced that 156 objectives for the tenth PNRR installment have been met, with 73 already reported. This tranche, valued at €28.4 billion, is expected to be requested by late September.

However, regional disparities persist. In Basilicata, only 21% of funded projects have been completed, raising concerns about meeting the December 2026 deadline for final reporting to Brussels. Meanwhile, cultural investments are targeting small towns, with Minister Alessandro Giuli noting that 315 villages are involved in regeneration projects to combat depopulation. Other localized successes include the completion of a new nursery school in Alba Adriatica funded by PNRR, and the activation of a major hydraulic safety plant in the Burana-Volano basin to protect over one million people from climate-related risks.
