Belize authorities warn of crocodile risks after Caye Caulker encounter

Authorities in Belize have issued urgent warnings to tourists and residents following a close encounter between a group of swimmers and an American crocodile at Caye Caulker. On August 8, video footage captured the moment a large predator approached a group of people during a night swim. While one woman had to be pulled to safety by a companion, no injuries were reported in this specific incident.

The Belize Forest Department and the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) expressed deep concern regarding the changing behavior of local crocodiles. Experts, including CRC Executive Director Marisa Tellez, noted that the animals are becoming less fearful of humans. This shift is attributed to the intentional feeding of crocodiles by tourists, which causes the predators to associate human presence and voices with food.

To mitigate risks, officials advise against night swimming, as this is a primary hunting time for crocodiles. They also strictly prohibit feeding, touching, or provoking the animals. In the event of an encounter, experts recommend remaining calm, avoiding splashing, and moving slowly toward the shore without turning one's back to the predator. This follows a separate incident in April where a tourist sustained serious injuries during a nighttime encounter in the same area.
