CBC journalist Neil Herland faces discipline after filming Toronto protest

Veteran CBC News journalist Neil Herland has reportedly been removed from the air and faces disciplinary action following social media posts documenting a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Toronto.

On Monday, Herland posted a 52-second video to X showing protesters gathered outside the Meridian Arts Centre during a Yom Kippur service. The event featured Mark Regev, a former adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as a speaker. The footage captures demonstrators waving Palestinian flags and chanting ‘Zionist Alert,’ while one individual used a megaphone to shout, ‘You’re going to hell!’

Herland, who has been with the CBC since 1997, stated that he encountered the protesters while attempting to attend the synagogue service. He noted on social media, ‘I’m a journalist. And I happen to be Jewish,’ adding that the demonstrators attempted to taunt and intimidate him. Reports indicate that CBC management has taken disciplinary action, with a preliminary hearing involving Herland and his lawyer reportedly held on Thursday.
