CBF and influencer deny Copa do Brasil draw manipulation
Influencer Giovanna Esteves, hired by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to conduct the Copa do Brasil quarter-final draw, has addressed allegations of manipulation following a controversial result. The draw produced an unlikely combination of three state derbies—Grêmio vs. Internacional, Atlético-MG vs. Cruzeiro, and Santos vs. Palmeiras—which had a mathematical probability of only 0.95%.
In a video response, Esteves denied any rigging, stating that the balls used are identical in weight and temperature. She explained that strict protocols are followed, including rehearsals and requirements to keep hands behind her back and maintain eye contact with the camera to prevent looking into the pots.
The CBF has also denied any tampering, noting that the draw was witnessed by all participating clubs and broadcast live. The tournament is highly significant this season due to its large prize pool and the provision of an extra spot in the Copa Libertadores for the runner-up.
