CBGB: The Movie explores the origins of punk rock in New York
The biographical music drama ‘CBGB’ is set to be released in theaters on October 23. The film depicts the transformation of a small country bar in New York’s Lower East Side into the epicenter of the punk and new wave movements during the mid-1970s.
Directed by Randall Miller, the story follows Hally Kristal, played by Alan Rickman, a man seeking a fresh start who opens the venue. Under the strict rule that bands must perform only original music, the club becomes a vital experimental ground for legendary artists including Television, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, the Ramones, and Blondie.
The film features a cast including Marin Ackerman, Kyle Gallner, Taylor Hawkins, and Mickey Sumner. Recent promotional footage highlights a pivotal scene featuring Talking Heads’ debut performance of ‘Psycho Killer’ at the venue. The production aims to recreate the authentic atmosphere of the era, including the influence of the ‘Punk Magazine’ fanzine on the burgeoning culture.
